returns from 7 December - now booking
[27 September] After a sell-out Christmas season last year, Sean Mathias' production of the traditional family pantomime Aladdin returns to The Old Vic Theatre from 7 December 2005 where it will play for a strictly limited season up to 22 January 2006 - tickets are now on sale through Key2Theatre.
Ian McKellen will reprise his role as the Dame, Widow Twankey. Joining him will be Roger Allam as 'Abbanazar' and Frances Barber as 'Dim Sum'.
This new version of Aladdin by Bille Brown is freely adapted from the celebrated translation by Sir Richard Burton of The Thousand and One Nights. Combining all the popular pantomime ingredients, it's being staged during the Christmas season as a tribute to the more raucous, pre-Shakespearean era at The Old Vic. It has an original score by Gareth Valentine and features the additional song 'I Believe in You' written by Elton John and Lee Hall.
When the production was seen last year The London Evening Standard highlighted that "Sir Ian McKellen triumphantly slipped into several hideous dresses and wild wigs, assorted high-heels and low jokes yesterday... emerging as a drag-artist sublime in Bille Brown's new pantomime script." The Financial Times wrote that "McKellen has waited for 40 years to play this part and his utter glee is infectious. He just loves it and his performance has a warmth that is irresistible... Billie Brown's script is delightfully witty and... Sean Mathias, directing, has done his homework and there are plenty of traditional pantomime routines."
